Does Fabio Capello Need the FA to Make Wholesale Changes For England to Succeed?
FanCast newcomer Mark Burgess is convinced England have the right man in Fabio Capello but feels England need a total reform in other areas to give the Italian every chance to succeed.
As Fabio Capello addresses the media for the first time today, following his appointment as England Manager, there are many cynics out there who question why a new man was installed so soon. On a bumper salary and free of any competitive internationals for the next 10 months; what will Capello be doing during this time?
I personally think the FA should be applauded in obtaining the services of one of the top 3 coaches of World Football so soon and I hope they allow the Italian to get on with his work and hire and fire who he pleases. His main job will be to clear out all the dead wood on the field like your Lampard and Beckham's but surely the biggest overhaul must be the current crop of FA coaches and technical directors who are gambling with our nation's footballing future.
So much has been written of late with the so called experts of the game trying to put their finger of where it goes wrong with England. Influx of foreigner player's? A Complete myth. Inferior Technique? Possibly, but nobody seems to want to point the finger that it could be the crazy appointments of Sir Trevor Brooking, Stuart Pearce and previously Steve McClaren that maybe the reason we are failing.
Let's have a closer look at their credentials. Sir Trevor Brooking went from being a MOTD pundit (Not very good at that) with fleeting managerial experience. Steve McClaren has proved that he is no better than a No.2 although he did win a Cup for Middlesbrough and Stuart Pearce at both Nottingham Forest and Manchester City proved he was incapable of managing anything and yet these are and were the guys employed at the head of our nation to turn around our national side.
No company in the world who had aspirations to become great would go out and employ three men who only had a Carling Cup victory between them. Maybe the problem with England has nothing to do with failing academies but the qualified people who are making the decisions at the top. You telling me that Sir Trevor Brooking is better qualified than say a Sir Bobby Robson to run this technical director role? It is a crazy situation.
I will be interested to see what Fabio Capello brings to the job and whether he will be given license to make the wholesale changes needed to bring about an upturn in our national teams fortunes. This guy is the most successful manager this country has ever seen so it's vital that the FA sit back and allow him to manage from top to bottom in order to give him the best possible chance of succeeding.
Capello rules with an iron fist which is what this nation needs and will be the first coach since Hoddle who won't be afraid to drop big names or reputations so Lampard and Gerrard beware. England will never have a better chance of winning a major title now that they have Capello in place. Despite what the cynics think, we have been blessed with some of the best young players this country has produced and its time for the FA to be proactive and support Capello in getting a team behind that are best qualified to take our nation forward.
