A true Arsenal great in every sense of the word!
Football FanCast columnist Teabag pays tribute to David ‘Rocky' Rocastle who passed away seven years ago to the day.
I have so many memories of Rocky Rocastle.
I remember seeing him play for Arsenal youth against Barnet in a pre-season friendly just before he broke into the first team and I thought at the time what a great player he looked, head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch.
I saw his début against Newcastle where he did one run from just outside his own box all the way to the edge of Newcastle's that almost resulted in a goal, who would have thought at the time it would be the first of many for the Gunners.
I will never forget that night at White Hart Lane when he scored his now famous late goal against Spurs to take Arsenal to Wembey that looking back now kick started the current era of success.
He was very much part of my life as any old family video will show my 18 month old son Alex running around the house shouting ‘Rocky, goal!'
And I also remember the day I heard he died and the minute silence at the Tottenham game the next day. That singular minute gave me back some faith in humanity as hostilities were put to one side with both sets of supporters respecting not only a great player but a humble and good man, and I am not ashamed to say, I cried during that minute.
I still find it hard to see photos of him without thinking of that day and bringing a lump to my throat.
But my lasting memory was of a player who played the like you or I would, like he was enjoying every second of it.
Rest in peace you dear, dear man. You were taken from us too soon.
