There is an air of genuine confidence around White Hart Lane these days.
The mood in the white half of North London is completely different to what we have been used over the past years or so. Fans of Tottenham Hotspur genuinely feel that this is the year when their beloved club would topple fierce rivals Arsenal as the kings of North London. Well, the Emirates faithful have heard all of these before as the Gunners continued their dominance over Spurs in English football over the past decade but this time it could be different all together.
The reason to feel happy at the Lane is the very fact that with the presence of Juande Ramos as the Spurs head coach, Tottenham has one of the most astute managers in European football and the quality of new signings that have taken place over the closed season speaks volumes of the former Sevilla manager’s football sense.
Juande Ramos has already been a hit in his very first season with Spurs during the 2007/2008 campaign by taking over from Martin Jol and instantly becoming popular with the fans by planning one of the most memorable derby victories in the history of Tottenham Hotspur over Arsenal in the Carling Cup Semi-final second leg(a 5-1 victory after a 1-1 first leg) on their way to winning the Cup final over London giants Chelsea.
While Arsenal have been looking for talented youngsters in the transfer market, Tottenham have gone for players with genuine quality and experience both at the international and club levels.
The likes of David Bentley, Luka Modric, Geovanni Dos Santos are handful for any opposition and with the presence of Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent, Spurs can look forward to enough attacking options to take the 2008/2009 Premier League season by storm.
With Arsenal having financial problems to recruit genuine match winners and Arsene Wenger sticking to his youth-first policy, Spurs can hope to teach their young inexperienced rivals tough lessons when the teams meet in the Premier League. For once, in many years, Tottenham fans are optimistic of toppling Arsenal from the top four list. Last season, they were better than Arsenal in claiming a silverware compared to none by the Gunners.
There is growing speculation that either Andrei Arshavin or David Villa could be heading to London and if this turns into a reality, who knows, we could have a new Premier League title contender come May next year. Yet, with all the attacking threats available to Senor Ramos, there is some question mark over the defence but in Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King, Gareth Bale and Micheal Dawson, Spurs have reliability which would be tested nonetheless.
All eyes will be on the trip to the Riverside coming Saturday.
Can Spurs now make the top 4? Will it be at Arsenals Expense?
