£10m that Spurs could certainly make better use of

Football FanCast columnist ‘The New Voice of Football' won't shed a tear if Spurs were to cash in on Darren Bent and feels the money will be better spent elsewhere.

It will be no great surprise if Darren Bent leaves White Hart Lane this summer, in fact it is almost expected. All that remains to be seen is where the Tottenham striker ends up and how much the Premier League club can facilitate out of any potential suitor.

Last summer there was uproar at the likely departure of the North London club's most prolific front men Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov. There will be no such protests this time as Spurs' top-scorer in the Premier League this season is moved on, with the majority of Tottenham fans willing to drive Bent to his next club themselves.

Bent has never settled at Spurs since his £16.5 million arrival from Charlton in 2007, some might question if indeed he ever arrived after a return of 16 goals in 55 Premier League games. It could be argued that, under three different managers, Bent has never really been given his chance. The non-scoring England international had to play second fiddle to Keane and Berbatov for much of his time at Spurs since his move from the Valley.

However, the departure of Keane and Berbatov last summer should have been the catalyst for Bent to finally earn his Spurs. He looked terrific in pre-season, but then so did Tottenham in general. Despite finding the net 10 times in the Premier League this season, Bent has failed to impress and is never the scorer of crucial goals and to me appears lazy at times. The fans just simply don't rate Bent and more importantly, Harry Redknapp doesn't rate him either. With a summer exit very much on the agenda now that Keane and Jermain Defoe are back in North London.

Of the clubs linked with Bent, Everton are reportedly now in the hunt while Sunderland and Aston Villa have also been linked with the striker. It is clearly Goodison Park that would be Bent's preferred choice should he make what must be an imminent exit from Tottenham at the end of this campaign.

That Toffees boss David Moyes could be interested in a player who has hardly applied himself 100% to the Tottenham cause is open to debate. The shrewd Scot isn't known for making any sort of outlay for a player that is not prepared to give his all for the club.

Should Bent sign for Everton he may even prove a success like his days at Charlton as a change of club often can have this effect on a player. Tottenham should not rue selling Bent, especially if Redknapp can get near the £10 million figure being mooted. For while Bent may or may not succeed at wherever club he plays football next season, one thing is plain as day at £10 million, Redknapp is more than capable of sounding out a striker who will make more of an impact than Bent when called upon.

I know £10million won't buy a world-beater, but with Redknapp's ‘wheeler dealer' skills, a striker can be brought in that is capable of giving him some selection headaches. Bent hasn't recently and probably never will if he stays at White Hart Lane, which is why a divorce for both parties is the best and only option this summer.
