Why Tev must be restored to the United frontline

Football FanCast columnist Lewis Doe believes Carlos Tevez should be on the front line of the Manchester
United attack.

Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov are both very different players. One is
all hustle and bustle, working busily off the ball as well as creating magic
and the other sometimes looks like he clearly wants to be somewhere and someone
else.

Tevez is a very under rated player and the case for him to play alongside
Rooney and Ronaldo is strong. The price tag that Berbatov carries around with
him does not justify selection. True enough Berbatov can do things in a game
that Tevez cannot, but every United fan will tell you they would prefer someone
playing who looks like he is genuinely glad to be there.

Although there are similar players in the world that match the qualities
that Tevez possesses, should United not sign him on and keep him at Old
Trafford, it would be an utter travesty. Tevez is not selfish and he will run
until he collapses, traits that fans like to see from such highly paid and
gifted professionals.

Speaking in The Guardian, United
boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "When you
pay a lot of money for a player, he invariably comes under close scrutiny. It
happened to Juan Veron and Rio Ferdinand, and Dimitar has also suffered the
impatience of people when a new guy makes a big move."

"At Tottenham he orchestrated most of
their play and, if at times he has looked a bit isolated, it was because our
players needed to adjust to him as much as he needed to learn our ways."

The Berbatov effect is still waiting to start. The Bulgarian clearly has not
had the same influence at United that he deployed at Spurs and his lazy penalty
miss last weekend against Everton personifies everything that is negative in
him as a player.

There is a reason the club was willing to pay so much to obtain his
signature but United do not need a player that is so temperamental leading
their attack as they go into an important phase of the season.

When he is playing well and scoring you would probably pick Berbatov over
Tevez every time, but he does not offer the traits that matter when your form
is not great.

No doubt his time will come but for now Tevez must be shown a vote of
confidence by the manager. The Argentine is low on form and needs a boost. If
he is given the nod in a couple of games the it is likely his performances will
start to get better and United will realise what a valuable asset he really
is.

If Tevez makes the move to Real Madrid
this summer then United will be left with a player that has just as much, even
more, talent, but they will not have someone that will sweat blood regardless
of whether things are going his way.
