Sunderland have confirmed the appointment of Steve Bruce as their new manager on a three-year contract.

Bruce has decided to leave Wigan Athletic to take up the reins at the Black Cats, with Ricky Sbragia having quit the Sunderland job at the end of the Premier League season.

The 48-year-old had been in charge of the Latics since November 2007, having also had a short stint at the helm of the same club back in 2000.

Bruce has also managed Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City.

Black Cats chairman Niall Quinn told the club's official website:"Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be.

"He knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region and I'm confident that he will be able to instil into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club."
