Australia international Brett Emerton has finally been able to return to training as he steps up his recovery from a cruciate knee ligament injury.

The 30-year-old Blackburn Rovers star suffered the problem six months ago and is relieved that his nightmare finally appears to be coming to an end.

He told the Sun-Herald:"I'm at the stage now where I've had my first full hit-out. I had a bit of a sprint today.

"It gave me an idea of where I'm at. Touch wood it continues the way it has.

"I've been running for quite some time now, and twisting and turning out on the park so things have progressed well.

"It's taken a lot of hard work, but I'm at the stage now where I'm starting to get more involved. I'd never had a long-term injury before, and it had an impact on me.

"Australia were still in the World Cup qualification stage while I was injured and Blackburn were battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League – yet, I could do nothing to help. Now I'm looking forward to playing again."
