Stoke City have dismissed reports suggesting they are keen to sign Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins.

The Nigeria international is one of several players tipped to leave the relegated Magpies this summer, with team-mate Michael Owen already interesting Potters boss Tony Pulis.

However, Martins' destination will not be the Britannia Stadium, according to City chairman Peter Coates.

Speaking about the former £10million striker, he told The Sentinel:"There's nothing in that one. We haven't had contact or discussions about him at all.

"I don't know where the story has come from, but there is no substance to it.

"I don't bother about the speculation. It is normal. I think our fans know we don't go in for publicity stunts."

Meanwhile, Coates has confirmed that Pulis has made an approach to West Ham United for defender James Collins.

"I think Tony Pulis has had talks with West Ham about this and that, but nothing concrete," he revealed.

"There's nothing happening at the moment with regard to that player and there probably won't be."
