Fabian Delph has revealed that Paul Scholes was his role model as a kid growing up.

The Aston Villa new boy, speaking ahead of the trip to Anfield, risk the wrath of his former club's supporters by conceding that the Manchester United midfielder was his inspiration and believes him still to be the top man in the Premier League.

Delph admitted that if he could prove to be at least half the player that Scholes is, he would be delighted:

"I used to watch Paul Scholes really closely – he is a huge idol

"Some Leeds fans most likely won't be happy about that but he's been the top man for almost 10 years in the Premier League.

"He is someone I watched – especially back in his younger days when he was scoring a lot of goals.

"I don't see myself as anywhere near as good as him. But it would be nice to think I could develop to be half as good as him." (Mirror)
