The Cottagers were 3-0 winners on the night in the second leg of their third qualifying round encounter with the Lithuanian side to win the tie by a comfortable 6-0 scoreline.

Andrew Johnson netted twice after Dickson Etuhu had opened the scoring for Hodgson's side.

"This was a game we were obliged to win because we are a team from a higher league against a team who cannot be expected to have done more than they have," he said.

"But those games can be banana skins and I am pleased with our attitude, pleased with the quality of our play and pleased with our passing.

"They attempted to make life difficult for us but the quality of our passing and movement was a little bit too good for them."

Hodgson is now looking forward to the draw for which they are likely to be seeded and will avoid the likes of in Ajax, Valencia, Villarreal and Lazio.

"I think we will be seeded. That makes life a little bit easier. When you get this far you get teams dropping in from the Champions League.

"But we have got a big hurdle to jump before we get to the group stages."
