Levy needs to swallow his principles and secure deal
Football FanCast columnist Matt Wright feels that Levy should sanction a move for David James.
Love or loathe him, there is no denying he is one of the best around and given the current plight we face, seemingly ticks all the right boxes. He maybe the wrong side of 40, but for a couple of seasons he could certainly do a job.
David James is an excellent keeper and has certainly come a long way from his ‘calamity' status that dogged the early part of his career. Strong, commanding with great reflexes, he is definitely one of the top five keepers in the League, not to mention when fit England's undoubted No.1. It appears that James wants out from Fratton Park and is hoping to seal a move away; I believe we would be crazy not to make an approach, especially given our keeping situation.
David James is far better than what he have currently got at the football club and given the uncertainty of when Gomes will return and Cudicini's shakiness, we need goalkeeping reinforcement. Having got off to an absolute flyer this season and looking like a side that is more than capable of just a top six finish, we cannot leave any stone unturned, even if the club and Dan Levy in particular may have to swallow a few principles. I know spending £2m on a 39yr old may not seem good business practice, but for the good of this team and making sure we have a top class keeper between the sticks, it is certainly worth the outlay.
Although Harry has been extremely coy about making a move for James, it was very hard not to smell a rat in Pompey's post match press conference. You had Paul Hart claiming that he was unsure whether his keeper was staying and the new club owner suggesting that he hopes he will remain at Fratton Park. Hardly convincing stuff and the Press seem convinced that White Hart Lane will be his next destination. Apparently it is all down to Harry convincing his chairman that he is worth the investment and the fact that the club cannot expect any financial return. I know which side of the fence I sit with this argument, but where does everyone else?
