Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce was satisfied with his side’s first victory of the new season after overcoming Gillingham in the second round of the Carling Cup.

A sixth minute strike from David Dunn sent Blackburn on their way to a 3-1 victory, with David Hoilett and Morten Gamst Pedersen also on the mark for the Premier League side.

“They gave us a bit of a run for our money in the first half,” admitted Allardyce.

“We got a nice goal which I thought would set the tone for us but we sort of slipped off the pace a little bit and let them get back into the game.

“We just had to sort that out at half-time. We had to just stop giving the ball away as much as we did, but that was down to some of the hard work that Gillingham put in to it.

“But when we went out in the second half and kept the ball and got the second goal it knocked the stuffing out of them.

“We missed another three or four chances that would have made it comfortable.”

However, Allardyce admitted that some of the gloss had been taken off the win after Steven Reid and Nikola Kalinic picked up minor hamstring and groin injuries respectively.

“All in all a good night and we travel home in the hat and look forward to the next round,” he added.
