Everton have completed the signing of Netherlands international defender Johnny Heitinga, in a deal worth an initial £6million to Atletico Madrid.

The Dutch centre-half has agreed a five-year contract at Goodison Park while his former club could earn an extra £1million in add-ons.

The 25-year-old flew into Merseyside on Tuesday to complete a medical after personal terms were thrashed out over the weekend.

Blues chief executive Robert Elstone told the club's official website:"We are pleased the deal has been completed to get John into Everton.

"He is a very experienced player having played at both Ajax and Atletico Madrid and I know David Moyes is looking forward to getting him started."

The 2008 Holland player of the year has captained his national side in the past, racking up 47 caps.

After making 152 appearances in seven years with Ajax, he moved to La Liga in 2008 in a deal worth 10million Euros, making 32 outings.

He joins Sylvain Distin as the second defensive signing in a week at Goodison.
