Everton have rubbished claims from Niko Kranjcar that he snubbed the Toffees before deciding to join Tottenham Hotspur.

The Croatia international swapped Portsmouth for Spurs on transfer deadline day but has annoyed the Goodison Park club after suggesting that a move to Merseyside was also on the cards.

"Not at any point did anyone from the club contact Portsmouth to express an interest in Niko Kranjcar," manager David Moyes told his club's official website.

"In Steven Pienaar and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov we already have players who provide excellent cover in his chosen position."

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright added:"I couldn't believe my eyes when I read what Kranjcar is alleged to have said.

"We made no approach either to Portsmouth or to the player's representatives.

"Maybe he was talking about Everton Chile!"
