Portsmouth have swooped to sign defender Tal Ben Haim on a four-year contract from Manchester City.

Ben Haim, 27, has seen his career stall at City and previous club Chelsea and jumped at the chance to play first-team football at Fratton Park.

The Israel international had found himself out in the cold at Eastlands last season before a loan move to Sunderland.

Ben Haim previously spent three seasons with Bolton Wanderers where he made over 100 appearances.

He has been signed to fill the void created by Sylvain Distin's departure to Everton.

Speaking about Pompey's disappointing start to the season, he said: "It's a big challenge but I think we can turn things around."

Meanwhile, Pompey are reported to be interested in signing former Chelsea, Liverpool and Marseille midfielder Boudewijn Zenden.
