If Fergie only buys one player in January…make it him!
Football FanCast guest columnist Fran Jenkins says if United only buy one player this January window then make it David Villa.
Watching Manchester United this season has been something of a strange experience and why we sit nicely at the top end of the table, you just kind of feel that we have rather bludgeoned our way up there and have hardly set the world alight. We are certainly missing something, especially in the final third.
Why you don’t need to be brain of Britain to work out who we miss, the fact remains that with he and Tevez both leaving this summer, Fergie hasn’t found a talisman that can replace the two. Rooney has performed heroics and Berbatov has started to show signs that he is perhaps finally going to fulfil his potential, but other than those two we are kind of short. Owen will have his moments throughout the season and maybe Valencia and Nani can step up a few more gears, but I still feel we are short upfront and need that bit of star quality to the squad to ensure that we have the goals in the team that can kill off any opposition.
I don’t know what Sir Alex’s plans are for January and if he intends to spend any of the Ronaldo money that is still burning a hole in his pocket, but I would take advantage of Valencia financial plight and land David Villa. Apparently the Spaniard is keen to quit the club and has recently sacked his agent who failed to get him the desired move away from the Mestalla last summer. Villa was heavily linked with Old Trafford over the summer and these rumours have seemingly resurfaced in the past week, with this time Silva thrown into the equation. Silva for me is a decent player but I do question as to whether he is any better than what we have currently got at Old Trafford, but Villa would certainly add quality and the spark we need in final third. If I look back this season there have been many games that we have failed to kill off and have made hard work for ourselves, as we don’t seem to possess that killer instinct upfront.
So Villa for me is the obvious choice and the fact he has fallen out with the coach at Valencia should make the transaction a relatively smooth one. I wouldn’t like to say how much he’ll cost us, but the money from the Ronaldo sale, as the Glazers keep telling us is available, so it shouldn’t prove too much of an issue. As I said I don’t know what Fergie’s plans are and who he has in mind to bring in, but if he only buys one player this January then I’m hoping and praying it is him.

I agree, we need a player like Villa to just put the ball in the net consistently. Since Van Nistelrooy left, we haven’t had an opporunistic striker who just gets into the box and scores 25+ goals a season. Luckily we had Ronaldo to sort that out, but it’s time to spend big on a great forward, and Villa certainly fits the bill. As for Silva, I think he’s a great playmaker. I have to disagree with the article when it says “but I do question as to whether he is any better than what we have currently got at Old Trafford”. Nani has been a passenger at the club since he got here, and there has been no discernible improvement in his performances over the past few seasons. Yes, occasionally he’ll score a brilliant goal, but the rest of the time he’s giving the ball away, over-complicating things, putting in woeful crosses and generally making bad decisions. Silva is a much better player, and we should just cut our losses with Nani.

Am I imagining things Fran, or do you keep using the word ‘why’ instead of the word ‘while’?
