In the early days Liverpool used Everton’s colours of blue and white, but had chosen red by 1894 and wore red shirts and white shorts for many years. They first wore all red in 1964 when Liverpool manager Bill Shankly thought the colour scheme would carry a psychological impact, and the iconic Liverpool home shirt was born. A black shirt was chosen for the Liverpool Away Football Shirt due to the successful sales of the previous black shirt. The shirt which is manufactured by German sports company features the famous three stripes in gold. Adidas manufactured Liverpool football shirts between 1985 and 1996, and again took over from Reebok after 10 seasons to design all Liverpool football kits. The Liverpool badge that features on all three Liverpool football shirts is formed of the city’s Liver Bird, the Shankly Gates, their anthem “You’ll Never Walk alone” and flames that represent the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

LiverpoolThirdThe 2009/10 Liverpool Third Shirt is white and is used in European fixtures. The Third Kit features the Carlsberg logo on the front on their football shirt but that is about to change. Liverpool were the first British professional club to have a sponsor’s logo on their shirts when they agreed a deal with Hitachi in 1979. Their contract with Carlsberg which started in 1992 is the longest agreement in top-flight English football, but will be replaced after 17 years in 2010 by Standard Chartered Bank. This will represent a major change for the iconic football shirts and the Anfield club will play in the Premier League next season for the first time without Carlsberg on their shirts.
