Why Rafa should look to hijack Adriano move
Football FanCast guest columnist Peter Lowe feels that Rafa should look to snap up Adriano from under the noses of Spurs.
They say that sometimes the biggest risk in life is not taking one and I always feel that Rafa is at his best when he chooses to and I feel he'll need to, whether it be with his team selections in the coming weeks, or his recruits in the January window, because the need to land a trophy this season is of ultimate importance.
There seems to be a huge significance on us winning the title this year, not only from the media but supporters as well, given last season's exploits. While I look at the table now, there is nothing to suggest that we are out of this title race by a long shot considering United were in a similar position last season in terms of points and therefore there is no real reason to be showing the white flag just yet.
The need to win the title is not the be all and end all for me this season if I am honest (hey we have been waiting 19yrs already), but I feel it is important that we pick up a trophy as sorts, whether it simply be the Carling, FA or Champions League, some silverware is due and we must do anything possible to achieve that.
Unfortunately a large part of what we achieve is going to depend on luck, given the obvious vulnerability of our squad when injuries set in, due to our lack of depth. We can only hope that with Prince Faisal in tow that Rafa may be in a financial position to resolve that issue in January; however if it isn't forthcoming, there are certainly some players out there who can come in on loan or a FREE that could add some weight behind our team. One player in particular who Rafa should certainly give real thought to is Adriano, who has been offered to Tottenham, as the Brazilian looks to rebuild his career and force his way into the Brazil squad for the 2010 World Cup. The former Inter star certainly needs no introduction given his prolific scoring rate and is surely worth the risk considering he is won't cost us a thing.
It has been well documented that he lost it a little bit, whilst at Inter and Jose Mourinho allowed him to move on by cancelling his contract so he could sort his head and life out that was troubling him. According to reports in Brazil he is itching for a return to Europe to stake his claim for a return to the international set-up and I just wonder whether it would be the worse move in the world to take a chance on him, especially as he will also be eligible for the Champions League. In my view gift horses like this don't come along all that often and when they do you must take them, especially when you have no significant back-up for Fernando Torres.
