Manchester United have been alerted to the news that Valencia's ongoing financial problems could force them to sell David Villa and David Silva in January.

Reports suggest Sir Alex Ferguson could be set to revive his interest in the duo as he attempts to add some spark to a squad that looked anaemic in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool have all been linked with Villa and Silva in the past but United could be in pole position to land the duo as they still have money to spend after losing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez in the summer.

Valencia's sporting director, Fernando Gomez, told Las Provoncias TV:"If there was a moment that arrived that we cannot stand it any more, then of course we must sell and they (Villa and Silva) would be sold.

"We made a great effort in the summer to keep them, but if the economic situation continues, then things could become very serious.

"Still it was a success for us to keep them, because there was some large money offered to us.

"We have not received an official offer for either Villa or Silva. I only know what has been said in the papers."
