Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has urged his players not to be daunted by Aston Villa's recent form ahead of Saturday's derby meeting at Molineux.

Villa make the short journey full of confidence following last weekend's 2-1 victory over Premier League title favourites Chelsea.

They have also taken the scalp of Liverpool already this season and have lost just one of their last nine games.

But despite the red-hot form of the visitors, McCarthy has told his players to believe in their own abilities.

"Portsmouth were on a run when we played them – a bad one – and guess what happened? They beat us," he told the club's official website.

"Runs are there to be ended, that's my opinion, and I'm not worried about Villa's run ahead of the game.

"They're a strong side, as Martin's teams are, and are very well organised and work extremely hard.

"They've got that bit extra as well with Ashley Young and (Gabriel) Agbonlahor's pace and (John) Carew puts a shift in as well – Martin gets the best out of them.

"They were pushing last year for the top four, but we can't afford to think about that either – we want to take points off them."
