Why Tottenham were right to take the money and run
Football FanCast columnist Matt Wright doesn’t regret Tottenham’s decision to cash in on the twitter king.
So the Twitter king returns to White Hart Lane and why his form this season suggests that there may be some Tottenham supporters looking back and wondering if we made a mistake in selling him, I certainly won’t be one of them as I firmly believe it was the right decision by the club to get rid. He isn’t scoring now, because Harry failed to play him to his strengths, but more that he needs to be considered the main man and the focal point of the attack, something that he didn’t warrant at Spurs when you had players like Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane already at the club.
With all due respect to them, Tottenham is a different level altogether, especially in terms of expectation and competition for places. He was never going to dislodge Defoe and why may some point the finger that he would have been a decent understudy, compared to what we have already get, I have to question that as well given what he gave our football club while he was there, I mean how many opportunities and chances did Bent have to prove that he had a future at White Hart Lane? Some will point to his goals per game ratio, but I ask them to look at the quality of the opposition the majority of them were against.
No doubt his return will see him play with real vigour, in an attempt to show the club what they are missing. I never quite understand this and I always think well if they showed a similar amount of desire in the first place then he wouldn’t have been sold in the first place. By going out there giving everything to the cause just only serves to highlight how he was cheating us during his time at the Lane, by producing such half hearted displays. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that he’ll end up scoring on Saturday, but as I said there isn’t a part of me that will have any regrets and full credit to Dan Levy for holding out and making Sunderland cough up the full amount for him, albeit once a certain amount of games/goals and other targets are met.
So are you glad to see the back of him and feel that the club were right to take the money and run, or do feel Tottenham were wrong to cash in?

I am well chuffed the waster has gone he is not a proper footballer in a team but a selfish goal hanger that only waits for the oppo to make a mistake,to chicken to attack the ball and compete,leaving his teamates efforts to get the ball to him wasted and us open to counter attacks.when the ball came towards his head he ducked it like a turtle protecting his head in his shell.a con man,he would of got stick in my old pub team for being garbage.

It was always inevitable that Bent would score goals but what amazed me from his time at spurs is just how poor the rest of his game is. His touch, hold up ability, heading, passing. I would love to know what Sunderland season ticket holders think.
Spurs knew that Bent would get a lot of goals hence the add ons included in the transfer fee. I think we did unbelievably well to recoup 10 eventually 15 million for him.

I actually think he was improving season upon season at Spurs – his hold up play, heading etc was improving, and I personally wanted him to be tried more often WITH Defoe – as he works hard with and without the ball.
One of his last quotes before Crouch came back I seem to remember, was of his desire to get Spurs into the top 4 this season. Then Crouch signed, and I think the toys came out of the pram.
I like him as a player, a lot more than Pav – but Bent’s attitude to criticism is not so good.
