Chelsea will be without Jose Bosingwa until February after the defender was forced to undergo surgery on a knee problem.

The Portugal full-back has been sidelined since mid-October but only went under the knife this week after a period of rest failed to improve his condition.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that Jose Bosingwa underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee this week," confirmed a club statement.

"His recovery time will be approximately three months."

Meanwhile, the news of Bosingwa's condition has been tempered by a positive report on the fitness of Ashley Cole.

The left-back will miss England's friendly with Brazil on Saturday but his depressed fracture of the tibia will not require surgery and a lengthy lay-off.

"Meanwhile, Ashley Cole is suffering from an aggravation of a depressed fracture of the tibia, originally picked up against Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge," the statement added.

"The injury will not require surgery."
