Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes he has become a target of referees after Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was critical of him earlier in the season.

When the Gunners lost at Old Trafford in September, Wenger complained that one unnamed player – widely believed to be Fletcher – had gone unpunished despite committing a rash of fouls.

But the Scotland international now thinks referees have gone the other way and are pulling him up for fouls he is not guilty of.

Fletcher's tackle on Ashley Cole during Sunday's defeat at Chelsea led to the free-kick which produced the only goal of the game, and the midfielder insists:"We are starting to see Mr Wenger's comments beginning to influence referees which is a shame.

"Now we have to raise our game and ensure these decisions are not affecting the match.

"It was clearly not a foul. I knew at the time and I have watched it again on the replay. I back-heeled the ball and Cole just jumps up in the air and the ref gives a foul."
