Owen_HargreavesOwen Hargreaves will have to be content with a pay as you play deal, if he wishes to remain at Old Trafford beyond his current contract.

Hargreaves has had a horrendous time with injuries since his arrival from Bayern Munich, which has limited him to only 37 appearances in two and a half seasons at United, and as he nears a return to the first team frame, after recovering from tendonitis, he has been warned that any new deal will be an incentivised contract similar to the one that Michael Owen currently has at Old Trafford.

A United insider said: “When players have a record of injuries the policy has been to offer them a low basic in comparison to the rest of the squad, but with high bonuses linked to appearances.

“That’s what happened with Michael Owen and in the past with Wes Brown.” (Mirror)
