Aston Villa striker John Carew was challenged to show greater consistency after his superb display in the 5-1 thrashing of Bolton Wanderers.

The Norway international helped create three goals and scored one himself as he gave the Trotters backline, including former Villa duo Zat Knight and Gary Cahill, a torrid time.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill said after the game:"John played very well. You do get performances like that from him when he is absolutely brilliant.

"But then in other matches he is not as strong. We are looking for that consistency from him.

"Maybe not topping that performance, but maybe getting close to it.

"John accepts that himself, but this time he was a real handful and Bolton found it hard to contain him."
