Wolverhampton Wanderers utility man Stephen Ward is hopeful of being back in action in the very near future, having been sidelined since August due to a knee problem.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international was forced to go under the knife to repair a damaged cartilage, but is now nearing a return to full training.

He told the Express & Star:"Hopefully I'll be ready to join in full training at some point next week.

"I've still got a bit more fitness work before joining in with the rest of the lads but I'm there or thereabouts. It's good to be fit again – it feels like I've turned the corner.

"I'm not setting any targets, I can't look too far ahead. I've stepped up my rehab and the signs have looked good. If I continue to progress, I should get some sort of training in during the week.

"There's no point rushing back and if you have to take extra time, you make sure you're right. I've worked hard on my rehab and all I'm hoping for is to train again next week."
