£39m trio more than dispel this Wenger fallacy

Football FanCast guest columnist Luke Westward has no reason to believe that Wenger will not look to spend big on a top class striker in the January window.

They say a week is a long time in football but a fortnight has proved an absolute eternity for Arsene Wenger as he has gone from hero to zero in the eyes of the media. A couple of bad results and performances and the knives are out and suddenly he appears to not know what he is doing.

It is strange the way the media works and it is probably water off a ducks back as far as Wenger is concerned; however it is a shame that they fail to appreciate what the man is trying to achieve and the manner in which he is attempting to succeed.

One of the great fallacy’s of course is that Arsene Wenger doesn’t spend, which isn’t the case at all, but he just refuses to bow down to the policy that the likes of the Spuds do in just throwing money around in the hope of finding success. Wenger is scrupulous and will only bring in players that he’ll feel will benefit the team and there isn’t an Arsenal fan I know that has been disappointed with the acquisitions of Samir Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and of course Thomas Vermaelen in the past three windows. That is £39m spent on three top class players that figure is hardly chickenfeed now is it.

Wenger has already suggested in the past week that in light of Robin van Persie’s injury that he may look to move into the January transfer market and land a top class striker. Arsene spoke glowing today of his admiration Edin Dzeko and although he felt he was somewhat pricey, I don’t believe that Wenger will hold back if he felt the Bosnian was going to be of benefit to the team. I was chatting to some supporters around me who believe that talk of Wenger going out and bringing in a striker was simply hot air on the part of the Frenchman, but I find that hard to believe as the trio of signings have shown that he isn’t afraid to dig deep when need be. I personally felt that Wenger’s admission that he’ll be looking to spend in January was sincere, especially given the horrendous luck we have had with injuries to Walcott, Bendtner and of course Van Persie.

So am I alone in thinking that Wenger will in fact spend big in January in order to beef up the squad ahead of the second phase of the Champions League, or do you side with those dissenters at the Emirates who believe it is simply hot air being blown by Wenger and no deals will be forthcoming?

Doubt if Wenger will buy big-not in in his genes- and none of us know how much money he has to spend- it wont be a lot. It wont be Dzeko. More likely to be a short-term arrangement-like Henry.

    Harry Barracuda:

Unfortunately we haven’t won anything for 4 years, because Wenger has been stubborn.
Also, the fans see the issues which lead to not winning anything, and that has nothing to do with the media.

People who think they are the clever guys, but spout rubbish, like you, annoy me.

well, the emirates is sold-out every game, so you are not needet to support the team.

Winning is fun, no doubt about it. I still prefer this fun to watch football of wenger, over boring clubs like ManU and chelsea who does not entertain the crowds. And I do believe most of our supporters would like to continue playing this barcelonaesc soccer. There are 3 european clubs which plays the game as it should be played, barcelona, real madrid and arsenal. We simply can’t compete with those to in the market, and we would not be where we are, if wenger had not scooped up all this raw talent, which he polishes over the years. He wanted ronaldo, makelele, yaya, xabi alonso and other great players, but he did not have the funds. You are blaming the wrong person, and I blame the likes of you if he goes back to france to coach marseille. You should support liverpool, you clearly don’t understand that a club can’t shell out £50 million more than their income year after year.

This writer-dude and I are more clever than you, and we will not share a pint at the pub.
