Mick McCarthy paid tribute to the response of his Wolves players to last weekend's derby defeat after they edged out Bolton Wanderers 2-1 on Saturday.

Nenad Milijas' wonder strike earned the Molineux club a crucial victory as they won the basement battle with another struggling side.

It clinched a first win in nine games for Wolves, who had made a dream start when Jody Craddock gave them the lead after just 122 seconds.

McCarthy was delighted with the points but was equally happy with the response to last weekend's demoralising 1-0 home defeat at the hands of local rivals Birmingham City.

"I thought it was a fabulous response to being beaten at home by Birmingham – we got that with spades on," he told the club's official website.

"It was essential we had that and despite being embroiled in a scrap at the end of the game we deserved the win.

"We shouldn't have needed to be hanging on and should have had it won before they got their goal.

"We'd dealt with corners well up until their goal but that brought it on us for the last few minutes.

"There's no pill or injection for confidence and their goal gave it to them and knocked us and we got nervy but the game should have been done by then.

"Rewind six days to the Birmingham game and we get a slap after three minutes and we melted.

"Today we got the early goal and it's a completely different game."
