Everton are being linked with a January transfer window swoop for Jermaine Pennant who is surplus to requirements at troubled Real Zaragoza.

The former Arsenal and Liverpool star only moved to Spain in the summer but his team are currently battling to avoid relegation from La Liga.

Zaragoza director Erard Poschner was quoted as saying:"We are disappointed with Pennant. This is based on the commitment of the players.

"With spirit like this it is better to 'sack' some players and seek reinforcements in the winter market. We want players who guarantee their work and effort."

The 26-year-old has failed to score in ten starts and three appearances from the substitute's bench for Zaragoza who are currently one place off the foot of the table, having won only three of their 15 league games so far this season.

Everton boss David Moyes is desperate to bolster his squad which has been decimated by injuries in the first half of the season.
