‘A Star in the Making’ – Spurs target Dejan Lovren
Harry Redknapp’s side have been linked to a host of names this transfer window despite showing no signs of becoming active in the market. The former Portsmouth manager is reportedly searching for several positions with another centre back one of his priorities given the injury proneness of some of his defenders and thus the north London side have been linked with the Croatian prodigy Dejan Lovren.
At just 20 years of age, Lovren is already considered a promising international defender. His reputation is ever growing and his performances have caught the eye of some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Lyon are believed to be currently leading the chase for the youngsters signature but Redknapp and Spurs have also been keeping a keen eye on Lovren’s movements.
Lovren made his debut for Dinamo Zagreb back in 2006, aged just 16 and over the last few years has cemented a place in the line-up, becoming one of the side’s key players. Despite his age, Lovren stands at 6ft 2in and is a powerful centre back. He is a physical player and has great aerial ability, both defensively and offensively, with the youngster often finding himself on the score sheet for Dinamo. The Spurs target is able to operate anywhere along the back four as well as in the defensive midfield role and has great technical ability, something that is not too common in a centre back.
Lovren has already begun to force his way into the Croatian national team and is highly rated by manager Slaven Bilic. He earned himself a place in the squad for the World Cup Qualifier against Belarus, although he did not feature in the game and remained an unused substitute.
Rumours have circulated that Lovren is on the verge of a deal with the French club Lyon yet nothing has been confirmed. Spurs were originally deterred by the £7 million price tag for a position that they ooze class in when their whole squad is fit (admittedly though this is not too often) and the Croatian international looks to have slipped through the net at White Hart Lane. The youngster is surely destined for great things and I have no doubt that we will be seeing him on the European stage in the near future. This could be with Spurs should they choose to make an eleventh hour bid.
