Bridge shows ‘Captain-not-so-Fantastic’ exactly what he should have done
The John Terry-Wayne Bridge-Slaggy French woman saga has taken yet another twist. Bridge last night announced that he would not be available for international selection for the foreseeable future. Fabio Capello has underlined that the door will remain open for the player, but the chances of that happening are as likely as John Terry remaining faithful. Wayne, I admire your courage but I can’t help thinking that that was exactly what Mr.Chelsea should have done.
In fact, the last season has shown exactly how much we have all misunderstood ‘captain fantastic’. Everybody is well aware of England’s chances this summer. It COULD be the year. How hard a decision it must have been for Bridge to pull out of a tournament that he would inevitably have gone to play a big part in after the injury to Ashley Cole. Do you think the thought of pulling out in respect for his country and team-mates ever crossed Terry’s mind? After all, this is a man who would give you a tour of a training ground for a mere £10k. Morals must not be high on his priority list.
I’ve read, heard and thought about a lot of potential reasons or outcomes of Bridge’s decision without lumping the responsibility completely on Terry. Some say he is foolish for giving up the chance to play in a World Cup. Some say he is right to do so and others have suggested it hasn’t made a difference as the likes of Warnock and Baines have been performing better anyway. The latter may be true. Bridge has not had the best season so far but, coupled with injuries and the bleeding obvious, it’s understandable that he may be finding it hard to focus. However, Bridge has already appeared in one World Cup and with 36 international caps, has a wealth of experience. Stephen Warnock has played 8 minutes of football for England while Leighton Baines is yet to make an appearance for the senior squad despite 16 appearances for the U21’s. Hardly confidence boosting stats to be taking in to a World Cup.
Without resorting to complete insanity, another possibility could be that this is part of a revenge plot towards Terry? Just picture this, England reach the World Cup semi-final against arch-rivals Germany. It’s 1-1 and the game is set for extra time, Baines/Warnock picks up the ball on the left hand side of defence but slips as he goes to kick to ball forward allowing a German winger to nick the ball and set up his team-mate to put the Germans through and end England’s dreams. Would it be Terry who becomes the villain for the situation? Would everybody be saying ‘well if Bridge was playing that wouldn’t happen’? It may be a ridiculous situation but I’m sure I’m not the only one who has considered it.
For me, Wayne Bridge’s announcement is nothing more than an honest assessment of his current dilemma. The fact that he doesn’t want to ruin the spirit in the camp with the inevitable media attention should be applauded by fans all over the country. I still feel an overwhelming feeling that it should have been Terry making this announcement and it has simply highlighted the arrogant nature of the Chelsea captain. He will be well aware that he could be in with a shot at a World Cup winner’s medal and is hardly going to give that up.
He may be a natural leader who is driven by a passion for winning but in this situation he is the ultimate loser. Wayne Bridge I salute you. JT I feel we’ve been deceived.

Fantastic read and have to say I totally agree as a true patriotic Englishman that John Terry should have stood down from playing for England.
John Terry is an utter disgrace to the genuine and honest English public and a disgrace to England.
Its obvious Chelsea fans will come to his aid as that is who they truely are.
When Joey Barton disgraced Manchester City by viciously attacking a young lad aswell as a certain french footballer, Manchester City fans disowned Barton so it just goes to show the balance of this world with scum and shinging light.

Losing the England captaincy is punishment enough for Terry, i dont buy into this whol ‘fall on his sword’ philosophy, Terry is integral to our world cup hopes with no first choice keeper, Cole out injured, Johnson/Brown struggling for fitness and with Rio’s back knackered he’s our only top level performer in our back five available at present, for him to retire would be an absolute disaster.

Are you all completely raving mad at that Island of yours? Do you want to win the WC or not? If you do, then stick with Terry (you dont have to love the man, for god sake!) and forget Bridge (nevermind how undeserving of this all)

If Terry had one ounce of moral fibre he would resign from England and ask Bridge to go and win the world cup for us.
