‘A Star in the Making’ – Álvaro Mérida
In recent years the English Premier League has been home to many young Spanish players looking to make their way in the world of football. Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas is the most successful Spanish youngster to date and the Gunners Captain has already made a major impression on the Premier League. His Arsenal teammate Fran Merida looks as though he has a bright future in the game, whilst at Liverpool Daniel Pacheco is impressing at Anfield and earning rave reviews. Another young Spaniard looking to cut his teeth in England is Álvaro Mérida, and the 16 year old is already attracting plenty of interest and looks to be a star in the making.
Born in March 1993, Álvaro Mérida is only 16 but has already had an eye-catching youth career and is ready to take his football career to the next level in England. The young Spaniard was born in Madrid and he first started playing for local football teams when he was 8, firstly playing for AD Canillas and then Villarrossa CF. Later in his youth he spent time with La Liga club Atletico Madrid where he made 17 youth appearances. In 2007 he was selected to join the Getafe youth academy as the Spaniard’s profile within football started to develop.
Mérida impressed in his two years with Getafe and they made attempts to keep him for a longer period. His strong performances led to him playing for the Spanish Under 16s national youth team and confirmed his place amongst Spain’s brightest footballing prospects. Scouts from outside of Spain started to take note, and after having to turn down a contract offered by Manchester City in 2008 due to school commitments, he was picked up by Serie A side Roma where he spent 3 months playing for the Italian club’s reserves at the end of 2009. Now Mérida has set his sights on the Premier League and interest from English clubs in the 16 year old is likely to be fierce.
Álvaro Mérida is comfortable playing on the wing or through the middle as a striker or even in the hole behind the front men. Throughout his youth career his has shown his credentials as a top marksman, achieving a strike rate of a goal every other game up to now. Mérida is certainly an attack oriented player who moves well even when his back’s to goal, whilst his passing skills and set play abilities are top notch. His all round footballing abilities have led to Merida being touted as the new Fabregas, and the youngster is hungry to develop his talent and realise his huge potential. Given his strong mental attitude and work ethos, Álvaro Mérida looks set to be another Spanish youngster to take the Premier League by storm.

He visto jugar a Alvaro y puedo decir que no es una promesa… es una autentica realidad.
Si yo fuera presindente de un equipo le ficharia ahora mismo sin dudarlo y así me ahorraria pagar dentro de un par de años 80 ó 90 millones de auros, como han sido otros casos.
Le deseo a Alvaro lo mejor, porque se lo merece.

i saw alvero play football and i was amazed at his skill and passion for the game. his speed and the way he played showed he had a great mind for the game and is clearly has a great talent for football. hope he goes far in his career!!!
