Arsenal have confirmed that Aaron Ramsey will be out for the rest of the season after fracturing the tibia and fibula in his right leg during Saturday's 3-1 win at Stoke City.

The 19-year-old midfielder was taken to hospital following a 65th minute tackle from Potters defender Ryan Shawcross at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday evening.

Shawcross was sent off following the incident and the Gunners have now revealed the full extent of Ramsey's injury.

A club statement read:"During yesterday's match against Stoke City, Aaron Ramsey sustained fractures to the tibia and fibula in his right leg. Yesterday evening he underwent surgery.

"The operation successfully reduced the fractures and whilst it is too soon to state an exacttimescale for recovery, Aaron will certainly miss the remainder of this season.

"Our thoughts are with Aaron at this time and everyone at the club wishes him all the best in making as speedy a return to action as possible."

Arsene Wenger was quick to condemn Shawcross' tackle during his post-match press conference.

After losing three players – Ramsey, Eduardo and Abou Diaby – to horror injuries during recent seasons, the Frenchman was scathing in his assessment of the Stoke defender.

"To see a young boy of 19-years old be injured like that – it's just not acceptable," said Wenger.

"We will know how long he will be out later but he will be out for a long time."

Shawcross also released a statement after the match in which he claimed there was "no malice" in his controversial tackle.
