Sunderland striker Darren Bent remains hopeful that he can secure a place in England's squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa, despite his club's recent collapse in form.

The 26-year-old has scored 16 goals since joining the Black Cats from Tottenham Hotspur last summer and is currently the fourth highest scorer in the Premier League this season.

Bent told The Journal:"It would be nice to be involved and I don't think I have done my chances any harm this season.

"There are only Wayne Rooney and maybe Jermain Defoe who have scored more goals than I have as an out-and-out frontman.

"All I can do is keep working hard, keeping doing well for Sunderland – there's no more that I can do.

"If it doesn't happen, I will move on."
