Bolton Wanderers' bid to avoid relegation have been given a massive lift after it was revealed that key defender Gary Cahill may be able to return to action in mid-March.

It had previously been thought that the 23-year-old's season was over after he was forced to have surgery to combat the cause of a blood clot on his arm.

The edge of a left-sided rib was found to be restricting the blood flow to a vein and a small portion of the rib has been removed to assist that flow.

The former Aston Villa defender may be able to resume light training in two weeks and could return to first-team action within three to four weeks.

Trotters boss Owen Coyle said:"He can't do anything contact-wise for another two weeks but after that he'll be able to step up. I would hope he'd be back within four weeks.

"I don't want to get ahead of ourselves, he's been through a traumatic time, but we've been reassured by the specialist that the clot is completely dissolved.

"It's a tremendous boost, first for Gary, secondly for the club, and thirdly for England."
