Former Sheffield United defender Phil Jagielka could make his first Everton appearance of the season in Thursday's Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese capital.

Jagielka has been sidelined for ten months since suffering knee ligament damage against Manchester City but David Moyes may use him in the last-32 second leg encounter as Sylvain Distin is suspended while John Heitinga is ineligible.

Moyes said in the build-up to the game:"We'll have the usual band of players with us. We have Joseph Yobo and Philippe Senderos while Jagielka is with us as well. We'll have options.

"I've got confidence in Phil Jagielka. He's a good player and we've missed him a lot. I'd prefer not to put him into a game like this but sometimes needs must."

Everton lead 2-1 after last week's first leg at Goodison Park and Moyes is adamant that his side will not be simply trying to hang on to their narrow advantage.

He added:"We'll play the same way. Sporting's goal swung the momentum and they'll go into this game thinking they have a chance.

"But it doesn't change how we come in to the game because we come in to it trying to win. We go in with great confidence. We've been in good form for a long period now.

"There have been a few games where maybe we haven't been as good but on the whole we've been in good form. The Manchester United game was good for us and we hope to repeat the result again.

"We need to play the same as we did against Manchester United, that's what we need to do. The next game is always the most important one. We'd like to do well in this competition and go as far as we can."
