Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez accepted that his side need to do better after a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City left the Latics looking nervously over their shoulders.

A disputed James McFadden penalty proved decisive at St Andrew's, with Wigan left just a single point outside the drop zone.

The Spaniard told Sky Sports:"I think the first-half performance wasn't good enough. I think we need to be a lot better than that.

"The reaction was there second half, the way we approached the game and the way we put a lot of pressure on Birmingham.

"The amount of corners that we created away from home, I think it showed that real reaction.

"We cannot rely on third parties to win football games, at the moment we're getting punished heavily by decisions but that's something we can do nothing about.

"We'll hope that that situation will turn and we'll get some decisions going our way.

"Now we need to focus on making sure we start the game the way we finish, we can't afford to go into a game and play 45 minutes without being ourselves.

"Saying that, I don't think there was much in the first half. I think it was a very poor game in terms of quality but very level.

"Both teams should have gone to half-time with a 0-0 scoreline, which is a completely different situation."
