Portsmouth could contest the nine-point penalty which looks set to come their way, according to the administrator appointed to the crisis-torn south coast club.
Andrew Andronikou claims there is a "slight chance" that the nine-point penalty, which is automatically handed out when a top-flight club goes into administration, could be avoided.
Pompey became the first club in the Premier League era to be placed into administration on Friday with reported debts of £70million.
"The assumption that there is an automatic deduction of points has never been tested before but we will do our best to avoid a deduction," explained Andronikou.
"Our solicitors believe there may be a slight opportunity but I don't want to say anything more because that prejudices my position in achieving it.
"I would say everyone has taken for granted there will be a deduction of nine points."
Portsmouth are currently four points adrift of Burnley at the foot of the table after closing the gap on the Clarets following a vital 2-1 victory at Turf Moor on Saturday.
