Stoke City winger Matthew Etherington may only be sidelined for a short period despite suffering a knee injury during Saturday evening's FA Cup fifth round tie at Manchester City.

The former West Ham United star had to be stretchered off the pitch in the first half of the 1-1 draw at Eastlands and there were fears that he was set for a lengthy absence.

However, a scan on his right knee revealed that there was no damage to the cruciate ligament.

"The news is as good as it could be at this stage," said Potters boss Pulis.

"If the cruciate ligament had been damaged then it would have been a long lay-off, but we're now hoping that he will be back in action sooner rather than later.

"There have been players in the squad pushing for a chance and this presents an opportunity for someone to step up and play a big part over the next few matches while Matty is on the sidelines."
