Manchester City midfielder Patrick Vieira has been charged with violent conduct by the FA, following a clash with Glenn Whelan during the 1-1 draw with Stoke City.

Vieira kicked out at the Potters midfielder during the first half of the Britannia Stadium encounter and escaped any action by referee Alan Wiley at the time.

However, a review of the incident has led the Vieira facing a charge which could result in a three-match suspension.

A short statement from the Football Association read:"The FA has charged Manchester City midfielder Patrick Vieira with violent conduct.

"The charge relates to an incident involving Stoke City's Glenn Whelan during the first half of the match at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday 16 February.

"Vieira has until 6pm on Thursday 18 February to respond to the charge. A Regulatory Commission will hear the charge on Friday 19 February."
