Daniel Levy right to sit tight over NEW deal
Daniel Levy is an ambitious man and wants the best for Tottenham Hotspur, yet it doesn’t stop the media looking to questioning him about his desire to get the top deals for the football club. Levy is a shrewd chairman and looking at the state of the finances and situations at other clubs there certainly isn’t someone I would prefer to have running Tottenham than him.
I read in the Daily Mail (I know I should expect it) a column suggesting that Levy needs to lower his expectations in negotiations over a shirt sponsor, given our deal with Mansion is due to expire this summer. Accordingly to the journalist, whose name escapes me at present, we need to accept the money isn’t available and with the likes of Villa, Sunderland and Fulham also requiring new sponsors that we need to be realistic. My first response to that the aforementioned trio are hardly going to be attracting the same sort of sponsors or level of finance that we are able to obtain and secondly why the hell would we look to negotiate any deal until this season is over?
I’m not an expert in financial matters here, but surely the possibility of playing Champions League football next season would kind of move the goalposts financially. All of a sudden we will open ourselves up to a new group of interested parties and ones who will pay a damn sight more money than if we were to sell out now to ensure the investment for the coming seasons. Levy is totally right to sit tight until the season is over, I mean let’s be honest a club the size of Tottenham is hardly going to struggle to secure a new sponsorship deal now is it.

beach bum, every chairman in the world makes mistakes!Levy has made some but be reasonable, the guy gets top dollar for every one he sells even if he paid too much for them.Hes assembled a fantastic squad and kept the wages down at a level thats managable.when it comes to running a team you cant just think of it as other teams do,ie portsmouth etc.the guy is fantastic.

I am not knocking Levy – however (ironically) he is now gambling here. The Mansion deal came about after we finished 5th – we were the best Premier League club that required a sponsor available at the time – but only after Man Utd decided not to enter into a deal with Mansion. We were very much Mansion’s 2nd choice, but still got way over the odds for a club of our stature (i.e. not playing CL football etc.). This was more due to them desiring the exposure so badly than due to our team realisitically meriting the £8.5 million a year the deal provided.
Now to get a similar or greater deal, we need to qualify for CL. Simple. Otherwise we’ll have to swallow it and sign a less valuable one.
The gamble is – sign before we qualify or don’t for the CL (for a lesser amount but one which may be greater than an amount should we fail), or wait and see where we finish. If 4th – any deal is likely to be more valuable than if we sign a deal now. If 5th or worse, a deal will be worth less than were we to accept any deal with an interested party now.
The Stadium development “naming rights” also may have a bearing on any shirt deal also, so it is by no means straightforward.

Levy used to be a good chairman, now he is fast becoming a great chairman..Kind of guy learning from past mistakes and will not ne intimidated easily, since Man Utd found out when parting with £32 million for Berbatov..or Sevilla with £8.75 million for Zokora ( now that was the deal of the century) ..Levy will bring a lot of success to Spurs, longer that he remains the better.Appreciating the bloke wont be a wromg move.

Great article, it still amazes me the amount of Spurs supporters that are still knocking Levi, short memories as to what the club was like when Sugar “THE APPRENTICE” sold to Enic, Levy has made mistakes but as said it has made him a better Chairman, ignore the Mail, they have knocked Tottenham for years and obviously have their own agenda in doing so!
