Drop Lampard and Terry? Has Teddy lost his marbles?!

Now then. Debating England’s potential World Cup has already taken up a lot of my time around the house, with friends or even on Facebook. Should Heskey start? Will Walcott go? What happens now Beckham is out? Are all questions that have come up. However, never has anyone suggested, as former Manchester United and Spurs striker Teddy Sheringham did, that Capello should ditch both Frank Lampard and John Terry!

At first it may seem like a ludicrous idea. Given that these are comments coming from a player who spent most of his time as a player detesting the sight of Chelsea it might seem like a ploy to promote players he may prefer to see rather than those who will perform better. Especially when taking into account that he suggested Ledley King should be the one to partner Rio Ferdinand, rather than John Terry.

Speaking to The Mirror, Sheringham stated “A fully fit Rio ¬Ferdinand is a must if we are to win the Cup. He and ¬Ledley King are our best ¬centre halves. John Terry is going through a sticky time at the moment. I would take Ledley, and play him alongside Rio.”

A player who can’t even train once a week going to the World Cup to start as first choice centre half? If he can’t play one match without needing days of ice-baths and rehab then how does Teddy expect him to handle 3 games in 11 days?

Sheringham went on to say: “OK, he has done nothing to get us there. But who is going to remember that in 20 years time, if he provides the foundation of a winning team? The back four needs to stay strong. Gary Neville is the best right-back in England, and I expect Ashley Cole to come flying back.”

How many people will agree with statement is anyone’s guess?!

As if that wasn’t pushing to boat out enough, Sheringham claimed that Gerrard should be playing in the central role rather than Lampard.

“Steven Gerrard is in the top four or five in the world. He has to play in his best position. If you give Gerrard the right role, he will ­perform. Michael Carrick has a big part to play. There’s a good balance to his partnership with Gerrard.”

Carrick’s performance against Egypt suggests that he may have a point. The Manchester United midfielder has been outstanding for his club and is arguably the best passer of a ball in the Premier League. He has a wealth of European and International experience and could provide the balance in the team. On the other hand, Steven Gerrard has been a different player under Capello than any other time previously. The Liverpool captain had 3 goals and 4 assists in his 7 qualifying campaign games and appears to be reveling in the free-role given to him by the Italian.

Debating a World Cup is something we, as fans, love to do. The outcome will be fascinating. Whether it is Lampard or Gerrard, Baines or Warnock, Heskey or Crouch, as long as it is England lifting the World Cup, nobody will care!
