Savage highlights what Tottenham fans have known for a while
You may love or loathe Robbie Savage (I side very much with the latter) but he is one of the few football pundits out there who tends to call it right the majority of the time. The Welshman doesn’t tend to hold back on his views, especially if it goes against popular opinion.
Savage is one of the first to go against the view that David Beckham’s injury, whilst a blow, is not the most significant concern that England fans and Fabio Capello should have at this moment in time. Robbie believes that the fitness of Aaron Lennon should be the biggest worry ahead of the World Cup and I for one couldn’t agree more.
Being a Tottenham fan I accept I open myself up to being accused of bias, but Lennon is by far the best and most dangerous winger in the country and the one bit of dynamism that this England team possesses where the likes of SWP and Walcott don’t even come close. Unlike the aforementioned duo, Lennon does have a football brain and this season has proven he now has the final ball to complement his direct running at the opposition defences. The 5-1 beating of Croatia back in September epitomised what Lennon is all about and in the first 20 minutes he had killed the game off with a telling run for the penalty and then a pinpoint cross that would lay the foundations of a result that would confirm England’s qualification for South Africa.
Lennon’s absence is absolutely crucial and why any Tottenham fan will tell you the same, I am amazed at the way the media still fail to give him the recognition he deserves. Hearing the likes of Shearer and Lawrenson talk that it is so important to see the likes of Walcott fit and playing for England’s cause, bemuses me somewhat as I ask the question as to what does he actually bring to the team? Lennon has proven in the last two seasons that he is the best right winger in the country and arguably, as well as Rooney, the most dangerous weapon that Capello has at his disposal this summer. As Savage says, Lennon’s fitness should be the No.1 concern ahead of the World Cup, not the loss of an ageing Beckham, or the form of Theo who Waddle eloquently put lacks a footballing brain.

I couldn’t agree more. Lennon (in the form he was in before the injury) is 2 nd only to Rooney in terms of ability to break down the opposition for England. Why pundits go on about Walcott I’ll never understand, he’s had 1 outstanding game for England & even Gooners I know tend to agree that Lennon is a far more dangerous player, it’s clearly that ‘Top 4′ bias that makes Walcott more important to England than Lennon.

Beckham was never going to start for England anyway, he would have been on the bench. So it is a bit overplayed the fact he is out of the WC. Lennon is automatic choice for RW and one of the hottest properties in English football. Walcott, SWP etc LOL, I think Capello knows better that to heed the advice of some of these journalistic hacks. Lennon is so far ahead of these guys, it is simply a waste of time even attempting to make comparisons. If Lennon were to be ruled out of the WC, then by all means debate TW and SWP, but please, do not insult our intelligence by comparing them to Lennon.

I’ve become obssesed with hating Wallycot. Ever since he graced the front of my son’s sticker book last season… or was it the one before? No maybe it was when David Dein smuggled him into the World Cup with Sven, as somekind of nobby mascot. Who cares I will never understand why wallycott is regarded so highly. Heard kids in the park saying they wanted to be him… yet Lennon has been doing a job at top flight for years. So pleased that Lennon has put to bed the buzz phrase of every wannabe commentator “…but his final ball” When Lennon dribbles I dribble from the mouth and pants area. Disco feet is unstoppable on his day. One thing worries me though, if he does go to the World Cup… the whole world will know the truth and unless we make the top 4, the big clubs will bend over backwards to sign him citing Champions League. I weep at the thought, but Lennon your country needs u.

I tell you what if we had Lennon on the right and Bale on the left, with Hud at the back to give them the ball we would be one exciting team to watch. Sadly I expect we’ll sell then both to Man U in the summer when the deals go on the table.

I can’t see Man U poaching Bale or Lennon. Don’t forget that it is a world cup year, with many players on show. Their eyes will be somewhere else. Man U have had too many injuries, and I don’t think that they would want Lennon – who gets his fair share of injuries. Although Man U have Evra they may want Bale at some point as a future replacement for Giggsy. But not for a year at least.
