Chelsea insist that Ashley Cole's recovery from a broken ankle remains on track despite reports of a setback.

Cole, 29, is currently recovery from a fractured left ankle which he picked up in a Premier League game against Everton in early February.

The England left-back has returned to Stamford Bridge following three weeks in France and remains on course to play again before the end of the domestic season.

Reports had suggested his World Cup place was in jeopardy after making less progress while away from the club.

"The club's medical staff are delighted with Ashley's operation and the treatment he's received so far," said a spokesperson.

"Contrary to reports, he's recovering extremely well from his injury and he's bang on schedule."

Cole's injury and fellow full-back Wayne Bridge's self-imposed international exile has given England coach Fabio Capello a selection headache at left-back.

Capello will name his provisional World Cup squad in mid-May and the Italian is hoping that Cole can return to first-team action before the end of Chelsea's domestic season.
