Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has admitted they cannot afford to make any mistakes if they are to finish the season in the Champions League qualifying places.

The sixth-placed Reds have closed the gap on the likes of fellow top-four rivals Tottenham and Manchester City in recent weeks.

However, after guaranteeing restless fans Champions League football again next season, the Spaniard has admitted his side can ill-afford any more slip-ups between now and the end of the season.

Liverpool take on Wigan Athletic on Monday night where a win would see them leapfrog both the inactive Spurs and City into fourth place.

"Manchester City, Tottenham and Aston Villa will be very dangerous so we cannot make many mistakes," explained Benitez.

"We know last year was really good in terms of points in the league and now we are in a different and more difficult situation because the expectations were very high.

"It is really difficult because we have three or four teams really close.

"We have to keep this momentum and prove, show everyone else we are good enough.

"I prefer to be positive and we will play well and continue to win."
