Rio Ferdinand has revealed he learned of his promotion to England captain while watching television.

Ferdinand assumed the armband after head coach Fabio Capello stripped John Terry of the international captaincy last month following a series of lurid allegations about the Chelsea defender's private life.

However, the Manchester United defender has revealed he still hasn't personally been told by Capello that he will lead the Three Lions at the World Cup.

Ferdinand was omitted from the squad for Wednesday's friendly with Egypt at Wembley after suffering a recurrence of a back problem.

"I haven't spoken to the manager yet," he explained."The team hasn't been briefed on anything. We haven't spoken to the manager, he hasn't spoken to the players, he does it a certain way.

"We have to wait until we go with the squad. I found out I was captain from the TV."

However, Ferdinand has described Capello's style of management as "brilliant" and similar to the approach taken by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

He added:"The best thing about him is he's black and white. You know exactly what he wants from you before you go out on the pitch, and that's what we've lacked in the last few campaigns.

"He says, 'This is what I want, this is what I expect, this is what I demand', and if you can't do it, regardless of who you are, you won't play."
