Hull City are set to offer veteran midfielder Nicky Barmby a new one-year contract.

The 36-year-old's current deal is set to expire this summer, but the Tigers are keen to keep him at the KC Stadium as they prepare for life in the Championship.

City are desperate to cut their wage bill, which is believed to be close to £40million, but Barmby will not be part of the expected summer exodus.

Barmby has featured in more than 150 games for Hull since arriving at his hometown club six years ago following productive spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Middlesbrough, Everton, Liverpool and Leeds United.

Bernard Mendy left City on Monday as the first of what is expected to be a raft of departures before the start of next season.
