‘One to Watch in 2010′ – Federico Macheda

Federico Macheda made a sensational debut for Manchester United, scoring a goal on debut, not just any goal, but a goal that many consider tilted the title race back in United’s favor in the 2008-09 season. Since then he has grown by leaps and bounds. Though also suffering an injury plagued 2009-10 season, his improvement was plain to see after performances in the appearances he made towards the end of the season. So why is he one to look for the coming season?

Macheda’s main rivals for the coming season would have been Diouf, Welbeck and Hernandez. With Welbeck and Diouf looking certain to be loaned out, it leaves us with Hernandez and Kiko, with Rooney, Berba and Owen ahead of them. If Kiko can remain fit he’s almost sure to start in the Carling cup games and also a few premiership games as a sub at least. Especially with Rooney being rested after World cup duty and Hernandez needing time to settle in at United, Macheda might end up being the third choice striker in the first few games of the season, and if he can capitalize on this opportunity, then Sir Alex Ferguson will most certainly give the Italian more chances.

Macheda’s biggest improvements since bursting onto the scene has been his link up play, he’s shown that he can hold the ball up, then pass it on to team mates with neat touches and short passes, showing he can play a one touch game. Also his movement off the ball has been very impressive too, this coupled with his ability to be at the right place at the right time, makes him a very dangerous opponent in the penalty box.

But we must remember he’s only 18, and he must be one of the best strikers in his age group. So far it looks good, but he has been found to lack the right attitude at times, having gambling problem and other off field issues. So Kiko needs to concentrate on Football for now at least or we could see him not develop at all! So 2010 is going to be a big year for Kiko and let’s hope he makes best use of it and becomes a star at Old Trafford!

Macheda needs a minimum of two injury-free seasons to mature and develop into an accomplished striker we all wish him to be. There are still many aspects of his game that he needs to work on, besides being psychologically immature. He still needs to improve his positional awareness, strength in the air, versatility, physique, ability to shoot from range, ball control and game reading abilities. The worst thing that can happen to his development is putting too much pressure on him. And I think Ferguson is very much aware of that. As for Kiko’s social ills, he needs time to mature socially. Even Rooney was a big time gambler and Ronaldo was a seasoned womanizer. time came when they learnt to differentiate the good from the bad. Two seasons will be enough for Kiko.
