Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has admitted defeat in his bid to sign three players who fared well at the World Cup finals.

Martinez swooped for Paraguay defender Antolin Alcaraz before the tournament in South Africa, but has given up pursuing three other transfer targets after World Cup performances increased their market value.

He explained:"There were three players in particular I was excited to see.

"But they did too well and that has pushed them out of our price range.

"Maybe we will see that interest come to fruition down the line, perhaps in the next transfer window.

"When the prices start to come back to normal, maybe they will become realistic targets again."
