Newcastle United have been told they are free to sign Marseille’s Hatem Ben Arfa after improving their offer for the French winger.

The Magpies have been on the trail of the 23-year-old wideman throughout the summer but found Marseille unwilling to do business.

Ben Arfa, who has been capped eight times by France, hit out at the Ligue 1 side last week after accusing them of standing in the way of a dream move to the Premier League.

However, following an improved offer from the Magpies, Marseille now claim they are happy for the player to discuss personal terms with the north-east club.

“He will travel to Newcastle tomorrow (Friday),” revealed president Jean-Claude Dassier.

“They have offered to raise the price for the option-to-buy if Hatem plays 25 matches and also pay the five per cent of the cost to FIFA.

“We will respond. After that it’s up to Hatem to agree a deal. We have to finish this story as soon as possible.”
